Callie Rae’s Senior Portraits in Maiden, NC | A Session Full of Memories

Some photography sessions are special because of the beautiful location. Others are special because of the people in front of the camera. And then there are sessions that mean a little extra because you get to photograph someone whose story you've been part of for years.

Callie Rae's senior portrait session in Maiden, North Carolina, was one of those sessions for me. 🤍

I've known Callie Rae for over ten years, so getting to photograph her during such an important milestone was especially meaningful. It's a little surreal watching someone grow up and reach a season of life that once seemed so far away. Being trusted to preserve these memories for her and her family is something I don't take for granted.

We chose a friend's farm in Maiden for her session, a place that already held memories from Callie's childhood. With horses, cows, sentimental keepsakes, and plenty of laughter along the way, her senior portraits became about so much more than simply celebrating the end of high school.

They became a way to celebrate the person she's becoming while remembering the little girl she once was.

Senior Portraits in Maiden, North Carolina, With a Personal Touch

One of my favorite things about senior photography is that no two sessions should look or feel exactly alike.

Your senior portraits should reflect you—your personality, your interests, the people you love, and the little things that have shaped your story. Beautiful portraits are wonderful, but the photographs that mean the most years down the road are often the ones that bring back a memory you never want to lose.

For Callie Rae, a farm in Maiden, NC, was the perfect setting. She used to visit and play with the horses and cows when she was little, so returning to a familiar place made the session feel even more personal.

Instead of choosing a location simply because it looked pretty, we got to use a place connected to her own memories.

That's one of the beautiful things about planning a senior photography session: the location can tell part of your story, too.

Meet Fasty: A Childhood Keepsake Worth Photographing

Now, we have to talk about Fasty. 🥹

Fasty is Callie Rae's beloved bear, given to her by her older brother when she was itty bitty. She also brought her baby blanket, complete with her name embroidered on it.

And honestly? These are the kinds of details that make my photographer heart so happy.

Think about it. One day, Callie Rae was a little girl carrying around her favorite bear and snuggling with the blanket that had been part of her earliest years. Now, she's stepping into a whole new chapter of life, and those same keepsakes can come along for the ride.

There's something incredibly meaningful about photographing the things that have been with us since the beginning. They remind us of the people who loved us first, the comfort we found in childhood, and all the little pieces of our story that have stayed with us as we've grown.

Fasty isn't just a stuffed bear. And that baby blanket isn't just a blanket.

They're pieces of Callie Rae's story.

Years from now, I hope these photographs bring her right back to this season of life. I hope she remembers how small she once was, the love behind those gifts, and how much has changed since those early days.

Because sometimes, the smallest things hold the biggest memories.

Why You Should Bring Personal Items to Your Senior Photo Session

If you're planning senior pictures, let this be your reminder that you don't have to leave the sentimental things at home!

Your senior session is a chance to celebrate where you are right now, but it's also an opportunity to preserve pieces of your story that might otherwise go undocumented.

Consider bringing something like:

A childhood keepsake: A favorite stuffed animal, baby blanket, childhood toy, or treasured book.

Something from your family: A gift from a parent or grandparent, a piece of jewelry, or an item passed down through generations.

Something that represents your interests: Sports equipment, musical instruments, artwork, or anything that has been a big part of your life.

Something connected to a special memory: An item from a meaningful trip, a longtime hobby, or a place you grew up visiting.

You don't need to bring a whole collection of things, and you certainly don't need to bring anything just because you think you should. One or two meaningful items can add so much personality to your gallery.

The goal isn't to make every photograph a prop-filled portrait. It's to thoughtfully incorporate the things that matter to you so your images feel personal, authentic, and completely your own.

And if you have something sentimental that feels a little unusual to bring to a photo session? Tell me about it! I'd much rather help you find a meaningful way to include it than have you leave it behind because you weren't sure it belonged.

A Little Quiet at First, A Whole Lot of Personality

One of the sweetest things about getting to know someone over the years is seeing all the sides of their personality.

Callie Rae can be a little quiet when you first get to know her, but give her a little time to open up, and there's so much personality, humor, and awesomeness waiting to shine through.

I love that about senior sessions. Not everyone walks in ready to be the center of attention, and that's completely okay!

You don't have to arrive knowing how to pose, feeling perfectly confident, or wondering how you're supposed to act in front of a camera. My goal is to create a relaxed environment where you can settle in, have fun, and let your personality come through naturally.

Sometimes that means slowing down and giving you a little direction. Other times, it means laughing at something ridiculous and capturing the moment before anyone has time to think about it.

The best part is that you don't have to become someone else for your senior portraits. You get to be yourself.

And Callie Rae certainly gave us plenty of opportunities to capture that!

When Your Boyfriend Is Willing to Be a Little Ridiculous for the Photos

Of course, we couldn't get through Callie Rae's senior session without mentioning her boyfriend, who came along and was more than willing to join in on the fun.

He was ready to make funny reels, strike some wonderfully awkward poses, and put those muscles to work lifting Callie Rae up for photo after photo. 😂

Let's just say we had plenty of material!

I love when seniors bring someone along who helps them feel comfortable and makes the session even more enjoyable. Having someone there to laugh with, be silly with, and share those moments can make the experience feel less like a formal photoshoot and more like a really fun memory.

And while we'll always make time for those beautiful, timeless portraits, I think there's something equally special about the photographs that make you laugh every time you see them.

Because your senior gallery should have room for both sides of you: the polished portraits you'll proudly display and the playful photographs that remind you how much fun you had getting them.

Those are memories worth keeping, too.

More Than Senior Pictures: Celebrating How Far You've Come

Having known Callie Rae for more than a decade made this session especially meaningful to me.

There's something different about photographing a milestone when you remember earlier chapters of someone's story. You aren't just meeting them for the first time and documenting what they look like today. You're getting to celebrate how much life has happened since you first knew them.

The little girl who once came to play with the horses and cows is growing up, preparing for what comes next, and carrying pieces of her childhood with her along the way.

And now, I get to help preserve this chapter.

That is one of the reasons I love photography so much. Our photographs become little reminders of who we were, who we loved, and what mattered to us in a particular season of life.

Senior year can feel like a mixture of excitement, anticipation, and a little disbelief that everything is changing so quickly. There's so much ahead, and yet there's so much worth remembering about where you've been.

My hope is that Callie Rae looks back at these photographs years from now and sees more than a collection of pretty pictures. I hope she sees her story, her people, her childhood, and the beginning of all the wonderful things still to come.

Callie Rae, thank you for letting me be part of this milestone. Getting to capture this season for you was such a joy, and I'm so glad we could incorporate the little pieces of your story that make these images uniquely yours. 🤍
